Ningxia Red – Wellness In a Bottle

We hear a lot these days about the damage free radicals can do to the body.   How more and more studies are attributing aging and disease can be attributed to the presence of free radicals in the body.  Inflammation, exacerbated by free radicals is being found to often be the cause of disease in the body.

So what is a free radical?  What you first need to know is what a molecule is, or rather, you need to understand that everything is made up of molecules.  We are essentially a whole bunch of molecules that agree to stay together.  Molecules are made up of 3 components, protons and neutrons make up the core of the molecule and electrons orbit around them.  When a free radical enters the body, it steals an electron from the molecule it comes in contact with.  This means the molecule can no longer function as it should, picture a a car trying to drive with only 3 tires.  The molecule mutates, changes the way it interacts with it’s environment, causing inflammation, and dis-ease in the body.  Essentially, this reaction is very similar to the way metal rusts.  There is some thought that all of the aging process is the result of oxidative stress, including, but not limited to, macular degeneration (loss of eyesight) and some forms of arthritis.

An antioxident is special in that when it loses an electron, it is stable, it’s ability to function is not impaired.  When you consume large amounts of antioxidents they bond with the free radicals and neutralize them.  Protecting your system from the ravaging effects of oxidative stress.

There are a lot of ways to add antioxidents to your diet, carotenoids, a powerful antioxident are what give fruits and vegetables their vibrant colors (think carrots, pommegranites, blueberries). The Ningxia Wolfberry (also known as a Goji berry) is the one of the richest source of antioxidents known to man.

ningxia-hui-region-of-chinaWolfberries, grow in many areas of the world, however, like many things, some types and breeds are more nutrient rich than others.  The Ningxia Hui region of China rests at at plateau in the yellow river.  The yellow river is intensely mineral rich and the silt from that river filters down into the water and spreads into the growing fields of the Ningxia wolfberries enriching them with all the life giving vitamins and minerals of the Yellow River.

The Ningxia Wolfberry (not just the juice, but the entire berry, pulp and skin) is the primary component of Young Living’s Ningxia Red along with raspberry juice, lemon & orange essential oils, purple grapes,  juice, apricots, blueberry juice and agave nectar.  Ningxia Red has a very low glycemic index and will not spike your blood sugar.

There are a lot of different juice drinks available now that more and more people are becoming aware of the ningxia-comparison-chartbenefits of upping your intake of them.  Everywhere I look there is a billboard dedicated to pomegranate juice and car bearing the emblem of one juice drink or another.  When I first started looking into this, what I wanted to know is, which one is the best?  What fruit, or combination thereof would pack the most punch for my dollar?  What I found is that the way this is judged is the ORAC (Oxidative Radical Absorbtive Capacity) test and the S-ORAC (Supre Oxygen Radical Absorbtion Capacity) test.  Super Oxide free radicals are essentially the mother of all free radicals in that unlike a single free radical that becomes stable when it steals one electron, Super Oxides create multiple free radicals, continuing to ravage until they have been flooded and neutralized.  The are responsible for some of the worst damage and therefore are the free radicals that are most worrisome.  As you can see, by the chart on the right, Ningxia Red blows all of the other juices out of the water, all for about $1.65 an ounce.
